Harrison & Cole is a high-street firm, not a City practice. Eight solicitors were still reading every lease and supplier contract line by line. Partners estimated 70 hours a month went on clause spotting that a junior could do — work that was hard to bill and easy to postpone. They wanted lower admin cost without hiring another fee earner.

An AI consultant mapped which documents were repetitive. We then set up contract-review software, from a starting price of £500, trained on the firm’s own precedents. It extracts clauses, flags odd terms, and writes a short summary. A solicitor still signs off. Nothing leaves the firm’s systems without that check.

We did not need a transformation programme. We needed evenings back. The consultant told us which files were worth automating, the software started at a price we could try, and our solicitors still approve every document.
